Cyber-Security Approval for Avionica’s aviONS Onboard Server

Avionica’s integrated Onboard Network Server, called aviONS, has been granted FAA approval for Cyber-Secure Connectivity and Application Hosting. The Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) amendment now provides operators with a secure connection for internet browsing over cabin broadband systems and enables secure application hosting. The approval is key to Avionica’s open architecture design of aviONS, which enables the system to host any function securely by partitioning through containerization, firewalls and secured OS. The secure connection also provides a configurable, priority-based gateway with secure routing for internet and a strict, but dynamic, firewall for browsing.

 

In addition, an operator can now use aviONS to bridge the three Aircraft Domains. An operator can use an Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) – typically only used in the Airline Information Services Domain – to securely access the KA/KU band within the Passenger Domain, while at the same time, retrieve GPS information from the Control Domain, connecting all Domain’s together seamlessly.

 

aviONS’ STC Amendment was approved after extensive development and testing performed to the FAA standards, including RTCA/DO-326A, RTCA/DO-355, and RTCA/DO-356. The Approved Model List (AML) STC covers all variants of Boeing B737, B747, B767 and B777 aircraft, as well as MD-10s/11s and DC-10s.

aviONS is a compact, lightweight product with up to 1 Terabyte of solid state drive capacity that can provide file storage and management services. aviONS supports applications such as distribution and loading of software for EFB operations. avWiFi is easily updated through ARINC 615A protocol, which can give real time aircraft data via ARINC 834 protocol while maintaining flexibility for the airline in working with their data.

Avionica Receives vSTC for miniQAR, avRDC and avCM

Avionica has received Validation of Supplemental Type Certificate (vSTC) from EASA for its miniQAR MkIII Quick Access Recorder (QAR), avRDC Remote Data Concentrator and avCM 4G Cell Module. The vSTC from the European Aviation Safety Agency covers more than 300 aircraft models and opens the door for additional aftermarket sales opportunities to install Avionica products on European-based aircraft.

 

With this approval, EASA joins Brazil ANAC, Canada TCCA, Hong Kong HKCAD, Malaysia CAAM, People’s Republic of China CAAC, Ukraine SAAU and UAE GCAA DOA.

The new terminal will be available next year and has been designed for the retrofit market, providing an affordable option for airlines seeking to equip their existing aircraft fleets with IP connectivity to unlock new efficiencies for operations and safety.

 

Inmarsat’s SB-S platform is the world’s first and only global broadband solution for aircraft operational and safety communications, driving digital transformation in the airline industry. Combining cutting-edge satellite technology with secure IP connectivity, it provides airlines with capabilities and benefits no other satellite communications provider can deliver.

 

Operational advantages include enhanced aircraft fleet and crew management, predictive maintenance, disruption management and aircraft health monitoring via Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) applications, which can significantly reduce flight delays and fuel consumption. Safety benefits include improved communications with ATC, digital data and voice communications, and flight data recorder streaming (also known as Black Box in the CloudTM). Flight plans and arrivals can also be optimised by pinpointing aircraft in four dimensions, known as four dimensional (4D) operations, which include latitude, longitude, altitude and time.

Avionica Earns STC Amendment and STC Validation for satLINK MAX on Boeing 777 Series

— Opens Door to Fleet-Wide Installation on Cathay Pacific’s 777s —

 

MIAMI, FL – March 4, 2019 – The FAA has granted Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) Amendment to Avionica for its satLINK MAX Iridium SATCOM system on Boeing 777 model aircraft. The STC was granted in conjunction with an STC validation from the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department (HKCAD). This amendment and validation enables the fleet-wide installation of satLINK MAX on Cathay Pacific’s fleet of Boeing 777s.

 

The STC was amended to include Air Traffic Service (ATS) voice functionality using the Iridium Satellite Constellation for global coverage.

 

“We are working with Cathay Pacific to upgrade their communications systems with satLINK MAX,” said Avionica Chief Operating Officer Anthony Rios. “The addition of ATS voice was very important to Cathay Pacific, and will open the door to other upgrade opportunities.”

 

Avionica’s satLINK MAX Iridium SATCOM is lightweight and features easy installation, resulting in minimal aircraft time on ground. It complies with the next-generation of Iridium SATCOM and can successfully transfer current Avionica satLINK content to a new aircraft without wiring modification.

 

Industry flight tracking recommendations call for position reporting every 15 minutes in normal operations. In abnormal operations, ICAO’s Global Aeronautical Distress Safety System (GADSS) recommends reports every minute for Autonomous Distress Tracking (ADT). Existing HF Data link (HFDL) systems, which are prevalent on commercial aircraft, are unable to meet the GADSS recommendation.

 

“satLINK MAX worked as advertised on the first power up,” said Simone Drakes, Avionica VP of Engineering. “As part of our subsequent installations for Cathay Pacific, we will provision for our soon-to-be-certified aviONS Onboard Network Server, which will host operator defined applications, ARINC 615A data loading and cabin wireless connectivity, and a cross-connect with SATCOM for internet access in flight.”

Avionica Raises Bar for Transmission of QAR Data Via Cellular with avSYNC 2.0

 

MIAMI, FL – November 15, 2018 – Avionica has improved its avSYNC service to make FOQA (Flight Operational Quality Assurance) requirements easier for airlines and commercial flight operators. The new avSYNC 2.0 is cloud-based with a private and secure network for transmitting flight data using worldwide cellular and local Wi-Fi networks. avSYNC still downloads Quick Access Recorder (QAR) data for customers and sends it to FOQA providers’ servers for analysis.

Avionica Names Anthony Rios Chief Operating Officer

MIAMI, FL – November 1, 2018 – Avionica today announced that vice president of sales Anthony Rios has been promoted to Chief Operating Officer (COO). As COO, Rios is charged with driving strategic prioritization and accountability for Avionica, with a focus on operational excellence.

He will continue to report to Segredo in his new role.

As Sales VP, Rios used his training as an engineer and certified pilot, along with his extensive experience in all aspects of avionics and product development to grow Avionica into a leader in innovation and quality.  He has more than 17 years of experience in all aspects of avionics and embedded system products, including specification, development, regulatory certification, manufacturing, and aircraft integration of airborne products for Avionica’s Quick Access Recorders (QAR), Terminal and Cabin wireless LAN systems (TWLU/CWLU), and SATCOM systems.

 

Rios joined Avionica in 2001 from Florida International University, where he worked as a Unix System Administrator. At Avionica he started as an engineering Intern, before becoming a Software Engineer. He was named Research and Development Manager in 2007, then Engineering Director and Vice President of Engineering in 2008 and 2009, respectively. Rios was named Vice President of Sales in 2015.

 

Rios is a native of Miami, and he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in computer engineering from Florida International University. With a passion for all things aviation, Rios holds an FAA Commercial Pilot License (SEL-PPL, MEL-PPL, MEL-CPL, Instrument, High Performance/Complex, CE500 Type Rating) and regularly fly General Aviation aircraft for business and pleasure. He is actively involved in various ARINC working groups, and is a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.

Avionica and GE Aviation Expand Digital Partnership

JV accelerates data collection and processing for the Connected Aircraft

 

AUSTIN, TX – May 10, 2018 – Avionica and GE Aviation today announced that they have expanded their partnership by forming a joint venture through GE’s acquisition of an ownership interest in Avionica.  The JV allows the companies to accelerate edge processing and wireless connectivity to maximize the value of aircraft data.  The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

 

The new agreement will benefit customers by improving the flow of aircraft flight data and enrich the data at speeds and scale supported by industrial internet technologies.

The JV will enable new levels of efficiency across a wide range of flight operations including air transport, general aviation and agriculture. The combined solutions are available with existing certifications for more than 300 models of aircraft including Boeing, Airbus, Bombardier, Embraer, HondaJet, Cessna, as well as Thrush agriculture aircraft.

Korean Air Selects satLINK MAX

— Meets Flight Tracking Requirements for Korea’s Civil Aviation Authority —

 

MIAMI – January 19, 2018 – Korean Air has selected Avionica’s satLINK MAX to meet flight tracking requirements mandated by South Korea’s Office of Civil Aviation (KOCA) that take effect in 2018. Installation of Avionica’s satLINK MAX Iridium SATCOM have been completed on several of Korean Air’s fleet of 55 Boeing 737 aircraft. Fleet wide installation is expected to be complete by the end of 2018

 

“We’re proud to add Korean Air to our growing list of global airline customers,” said Raul Segredo, president of Avionica. “We know there are several solutions available for aircraft tracking with 15-minute or one-minute position reports as mandated by the KOCA starting next year, but we believe our satLINK MAX is the most capable and cost effective of all the options.”

 

Avionica’s satLINK MAX Iridium SATCOM is lightweight with simple installation resulting in minimal aircraft time on ground. It complies with the next-generation Iridium SATCOM and can successfully transfer current Avionica satLINK content to the new 737MAX aircraft being delivered to Korean Air next year with no wiring modification needed.

 

Industry flight tracking recommendations require position reporting every 15 minutes in normal operations.  However, in abnormal operations, ICAO’s Global Aeronautical Distress Safety System (GADSS) includes Autonomous Distress Tracking (ADT) recommendations for up to one minute. This is a requirement that existing HF Data link (HFDL) systems are unable to meet reliably.

 

“Avionica’s, lightweight, safety-service approved satLINK MAX is the best solution to provide the performance necessary to track aircraft to within six nautical miles of precision,” said Anthony Rios, vice president of Sales at Avionica. “Korean Air will also realize significant savings on their SATCOM operational cost with Iridium.”

 

In order to achieve the most precise aircraft tracking, Korean Airlines will also add FANS and ATS Safety Voice communications to these B737 aircraft. With this, Korean Airlines can now receive preferred flight routing as the North Pacific flight control centers increasingly adopt FANS flight management communications systems.

MAX for MAX: Avionica’s satLINK MAX Earns STC on 737 MAX 8

 

 

 

MIAMI – January 19, 2018 –  Avionica successfully completed the first Supplemental Type Certification (STC) for their flagship Iridium transceiver, the satLINK MAX. The STC was performed on a Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft.

 

“Earning this STC on the new generation 737 MAX is a great accomplishment for Avionica,” said Mr. Raul Segredo, president of Avionica. “It’s another in the growing list of STCs that we’ve completed for our family of products.”

 

Developed in parallel with the 737 MAX, the satLINK MAX is Avionica’s solution for multichannel communication on the Iridium global satellite network. It offers two flight deck Air Traffic Service (ATS) Safety Voice channels with priority capability, one Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) channel that is certified for FANS-1/A(+) and optimized for maximum throughput, and one additional channel that can be used for cabin communications or dedicated datalinks.

 

“satLINK MAX is the perfect solution for 737 MAX 8 and other commercial aircraft because of the size, weight and functionality of the system,” said Avionica Engineering Vice President Ms. Simone Drake, who is also a Designated Engineering Representative (DER) for the company. “The power of the system enables satLINK MAX to provide Quick Access Recorder (QAR) and Aircraft Interface Device (AID) functions on an EFB, as well as server capabilities to host applications, such as e-Techlogs.”

 

The optional avWIFI enables seamless integration with portable electronic devices, such as EFBs, smartphones and any wireless tablets, which can be used to connect to the secure system to utilize hosted applications on the server or to make voice calls through the Avionica satLINK mobile app.

 

Using the avRDC MAX, Remote Data Concentrator and QAR, a significant reduction in installation time and weight can be realized, while also providing convenient support for Flight Operational Quality Assurance (FOQA) and live aircraft data access to Electronic Flight Bags (EFBs).

 

Avionica’s avCM Cellular Module offers both automated QAR data offloading to a backend avSYNC server system and on-ground internet access for EFB updates and operational datalinks.
