 IFE Server and Access Terminal

Passenger Personal Electronic Devices (PEDs) have undisputably changed the In-Flight Entertainment landscape. Forever. Be they netbooks, smartphones, or tablets, most passengers carry one or more, and are accustomed to using them for computing and communications, work and entertainment. The competitive commercial marketplace is constantly evolving and improving capabilities of these devices, constantly raising the performance bar. Most importantly for the airlines, they are already on board, familiar, and available.

The traditional IFE system exists in stark contrast to this reality. The market is dominated by less than a handful of players, selling heavy, expensive, permanent installations that may even be obsolete when installed. So-called "Live" broadband satellite-based systems often provide nothing but ground-based, previously-recorded content. The expense, weight, and service charges are therefore unjustified.

IFE for Everyone.

Taking its queue from existing market realities, OnBoard‘s interface to the aircraft is the only "permanent" component of the installation. The tablet computer-based server is removable and upgradeable. It can host over 800 hours of video and support multiple applications from H.264 video streaming, to web hosting of online catalogs, to POS applications, including real-time credit card clearing and text messaging (when used with Avionica’s satLINK Iridium gateway). OnBoard not only fits where traditional systems cannot, it offers a far richer experience than the competition. It’s scaleable and content is wirelessly updateable. What else could you want?

Now, You Can Take it ALL With You.

Avionics has become a data-centric discipline. Maintenance Manuals, Navigation Databases, LRU Operating Software and more are provided electronically. So now, OnBoard stores ALL the e-documents, databases, and code images necessary to maintain an aircraft, whether at home or away- in addition to all the media content necessary to entertain your passengers. OnBoard can be removed from its locked mount and carried about the aircraft as necessary for maintenance purposes. In addition to IFE, numerous support applications can be hosted, including ARINC 615, ARINC 615A dataloading, ARINC 429 databus analysis, TCAS diagnostics, DFDR download, flight data analysis, etc.

Part of the Big Picture.

Our new menuing software enables users to configure their own custom prompts and workflow. From one-touch operation to comprehensive data entry, the choice is yours. Whatever your requirements, the RSU II can be customized to meet them.

OnBoard is equipped with an Ethernet port designed to communicate with an Avionica secureLINK 802.11 secure wireless router or 3G Wireless miniQAR Mk III. In conjunction with Avionica’s avSYNC software, these wireless TWLU routers maintain OnBoard current with the latest content, manuals, dataloads, and applications. OnBoard can also be connected to suitable airborne SATCOM systems, such as Avionica’s satLINK Iridium gateway, providing text e-mail or SMS access to passengers devices. We call this our "Wired Aircraft" architecture.

Certified. Already STC’d on the Boeing 737 NG.
